Wilderness by Rockwell Kent

by Janina

Rockwell Kent is an American artist and illustrator, well known for his paintings, book illustrations (Moby Dick), and bookplates.  What many people don’t know is that he was also an adventurer.  His first book, Wilderness is his account from 1918-19 of adventuring in the Alaskan frontier with his 9-year-old son.  Peppered with beautiful illustrations, this book helped support him on his New Hampshire homestead where he worked to complete a series of paintings from the Alaskan wilderness for exhibition in 1920 at Knoedler Galleries in New York

Below you will find the complete book for download or viewing, but you can also pick up a paper copy here at Logos, along with his illustrated edition of Moby Dick, VoyagingN by E, and The Art of the Bookplate.

Codex Seraphinianus – Now Available for Download

by Janina

A good friend of mine once showed me some images online of Codex Seraphinianus, the visual encyclopedia of an unknown world created by Italian artist Luigi Serafini.  Approximately 360 pages, Serafini created the codex during 30 months between 1976 and 1978.  The book is filled with beautiful pages of fantastic creatures in an unknown language, and for the first time since it was published it has been released in an affordable format: free.  You can find it on the issuu self publishing site where you can view it and download it, for free.  Paper, out of print editions of this book usually range upwards of $400, so this is truly a gem. I am really very excited about this.

Parking Lot survey & Information

by Debbie

On March 1, the City of Santa Cruz implemented fees for the parking lot located behind Logos.

We want to hear your opinions, suggestions and concerns about this new plan. We would like to collect this information to turn over to the city, in order to improve the situation, so please respond in kind; in other words, constructive criticism, praise or suggestions only please!

We did not ask for this and we are trying to do what we can to make it reasonably better. The city reports that the cost of parking maintenance has increased greatly, and this is how they are trying to address their budget problems.

Update: Thank you! We are getting lots of survey responses and look forward to more. There are a couple of issues that have come up, so we thought we would mention them here…

1. A couple of people have indicated they are confused by the instructions; should they carry the ticket with them or leave it on their dashboard? The answer is: carry it with you. The city has a system for reading the ‘machine’ which tells them which spaces should have cars and which should not. If you carry your ticket with you, then you can update your parking at any paystation downtown (using your space number).

2. Handicapped Parking: We agree with every person who has written to us about the ridiculous placement of Handicapped Spaces with respect to the Pay Stations. It seems to contradict one of the most important aspects of those spaces, that is, to place them close to business entrances to reduce the distance. We have let the City know of your overwhelming responses on this issue, and have been assured that they are working on a better plan. Just want you to know…some of the survey replies seem to point the finger at us! We had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with this (nor any other part of this program).

3. We do not see your email address in the survey (it is completely anonymous) so if you want to ask a question, please email us directly: logos@logosbooksrecords.com.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland – Lewis Carroll

by Janina

With the onset of Tim Burton’s film Alice, people seem to be flocking to our store looking for beautiful old illustrated versions of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. As a used bookstore, sometimes we can’t always provide the cool old books we would like to. We can only sell you what people sell us. What we can do, is provide you with a nice alternative.  Below you will find the first ever film version of Alice in Wonderland and digital copy of the first edition of Lewis Carroll and John Tenniel’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. You can read this online, or download it as a PDF.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter – Seth Grahame-Smith

by Janina

Out now is Seth Grahame-Smith’s new novel, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter! Graham-Smith is the author of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which quickly picked up a cult following leading to a tedious series from Quirk books (Quirk Classics, by Steve Hockensmith and Ben H. Winters).  His new novel breaks away from the mash-up genre and follows more in the footsteps of World War Z.  In fact, early staff reviews are already reporting that his writing is as good, if not better, than Max Brooks’.
