Rip Van Winkle – Arthur Rackham and N.C. Wyeth

by Janina

You may have noticed by now that I am a little bit obsessed with N.C. Wyeth. As I’m writing these posts I am preparing for a trip back East to Philadelphia, once home to Howard Pyle, N.C. Wyeth, and Maxfield Parrish. Philadelphia has a remarkable library, the Free Library of Philadelphia, where you can see N.C. Wyeth paintings hanging on the wall in the basement level children’s section, or see original Arthur Rackham drawings on the top floor in the rare book room. This has got me thinking about the two different versions of Washington Irving’s Rip Van Winkle illustrated by Arthur Rackham and N.C. Wyeth. We carry the Arthur Rackham version at logos, but I had not seen the N.C. Wyeth version until I discovered it accidentally on archive.org.  Below you can read or download either version:

This One Will Kill You.

by Ray

Director Christopher Nolan’s vision of everyone’s favorite caped crusader not only made The Dark Knight the biggest film of the summer of 2008, but also launched it into a top spot on the list of all time domestic box office receipts. It even went on to snag a posthumous supporting acting Oscar for Heath Ledger’s already iconic portrayal of the Joker as well as become the gold standard for comic to film adaptations.

Howard Pyle – Book of Pirates

by Janina

There is no better way to follow Treasure Island than with a book about pirates! Howard Pyle’s Book of pirates : fiction, fact and fancy concerning the buccaneers and marooners of the Spanish Main is a wonderfully compiled collection of pirate stories and histories.  Written and illustrated by Howard Pyle, this is a remarkable book. Pyle is best known for The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, but he is also responsible for popularizing the Brandywine School of illustration seen throughout turn of the century art. He taught such greats as N.C. Wyeth and Maxfield Parrish, cementing a sort of fantastic realism that changed illustration forever. Download or read his Book of Pirates below:

A Treasure Trove of Jewelry and Fiber Craft Titles

by Brenda

We are pleased to announce the arrival of a huge number of Jewelry, Sewing, Knitting, Paper Crafts, Felting, and Crocheting remainder titles.  Remainders are new books that are usually priced 50-75% off the original retail price.  Many of these titles are from well known craft publishers such as Interweave Press and North Light.

Among the jewelry books you will find Bead Romantique by Lisa Kan, emphasizing designs with a romantic, but modern sensibility.    Wire & Bead Celtic Jewelry by Linda Jones is filled with unique and enchanting projects that use the intricate curves, knots, and swirls of the Celtic people.  Another beautiful jewelry title is Contemporary Copper Jewelry by Sharilyn Miller.  In this book the author teaches how to create stunning necklaces, bracelets, and earrings using stylish copper.

The fiber department is overflowing with books that are suitable for the new knitter, but also many that provide challenges for the seasoned pro.  There are titles devoted solely to socks, shawls, or sweaters.  Many titles teach basic knitting skills (such as how to create cables) and then list numerous stitch patterns to incorporate into projects.

The seamstress will find new titles here also.   Check out Customizing Cool Clothes by Kate Haxell, a book that explains how to take a basic garment and spice it up to match your personality.  Author Meg McElwee brings us another cool sewing book titled Sew Liberated which includes 20 stylish projects for the modern seamstress.

Lastly, we have several new craft titles that are devoted to collage technique,  soap making,  and using found objects to create art pieces.  Don’t miss this opportunity to buy great craft titles at 50% or less of retail value.
